In the past decade the automotive industry has changed in many ways; from production to sales, we’ve seen the focus of industry leaders shift to adapt to the changing market. More distinctly as of the last two years many have felt the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the toll it has taken on car sales in Canada. This has been the spotlight of automotive news in Canada and continues to be as we see an astonishing low in car sales numbers, a direct reflection of Canadian’s changing spending habits. However, pre-pandemic, one of the leading topics for multiple years has been push for electric vehicles, which is sure to become the focus once again with the governments new in place Carbon Tax Plan.

In short, the Carbon Tax Plan is already in place which is why we have seen a rise in gas prices as of the 2021 year. By 2030 Ontario will be expecting to be paying on average an additional 39 cents per liter, seeing incremental rises at the pump on an annual basis (https://globalnews.ca/news/7515981/canada-climate-change-plan-justin-trudeau/). For all those who enjoy driving their fuel burning performance machines, long cruises may soon become a luxury rather than a daily occurrence. For those taking lengthy daily commutes for work, you may soon find yourself facing the decision to seriously consider an all-electric vehicle. Although this news can be unsettling for many auto enthusiasts who have grown a love for the unique qualities of many iconic gas-powered engines, we must support the government's efforts to reduce carbon pollution and adapt with the times.

On a positive note, we have seen many amazing advancements in electric vehicle production and the efforts to reduce sales in gas-powered vehicles in Canada over recent years. The new technology being released in many all-electric and hybrid powered vehicles is impressive to say the least, with more push for performance based electric options that might better suit the demands of driving enthusiasts. Although the options are limited in this category of vehicle, we are expected to see many exciting releases to come.

What does the Carbon Tax Plan and rising gas prices mean for the automotive market? Well for the enthusiast it may be time to hold tight onto your beloved gas-powered car or consider investing in your dream car sooner than later as the limited production of these vehicles moving forward is sure to drive prices up. Take extra care of your car in coming years as it may yield impressive resale with a little bit of patience. For those of you who already dread visiting the gas pump, consider trading-in on your favorite new electric vehicle to get a jump on the increasing expense of owning a gas-powered vehicle. Although this news does not mean it quite yet an end to the era of owning a gas-powered vehicle, it is fair to say it is quickly approaching for the Canadian market.

Automatic vs Manual: When newer doesn't necessarily mean better...

Over the past decade automotive manufacturers have exponentially furthered the technology in their cars. Improving interior quality, Bluetooth streaming, reverse cameras, parking sensors, more efficient engines making more power.... what’s there not to like? Not spoken for was the trend of auto manufacturers moving to solely automatic transmissions. We now see the majority of performance vehicles equipped with a 7-10 speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, that without argument, is faster to operate than anyone working a clutch and manual transmission.

Now if these new high-tech automatic transmissions are faster and more efficient why is this a topic of discussion? Well if you’ve ever had the opportunity to learn how to drive a manual car, you may realize it’s a whole new driving experience! From the clutch to the shift gate, every manual car feels unique in its own way... and it’s arguably a far more engaging experience. Suddenly a 200hp manual car is more “alive” than a 400hp automatic. This is because an automatic essentially operates a portion of the vehicle for you, let’s consider it assisted driving. With a manual transmission your in full control of how your vehicle drives, it’s you and the car.

Along with being in full control comes the necessary learning curve any driving enthusiast should go through, a skill set that automatic has robbed from most drivers on the road today. Rev match downshifting, utilizing engine braking, clutch control, and understanding the power band of your car is often discounted if you’ve only ever driven automatic. That being said, modern automatic sports cars are fully capable of operating as a manual car does and you can learn a portion of this skill set, but with little to no risk of error and in a far less engaging manor.

Manual cars are becoming much less apparent from new auto manufacturers due to the obvious benefits of automatic transmissions, however there is no replacement for rowing through the gears on a windy road and listening to your engine sing. There is far more room for error but that’s exactly what makes the experience so special and makes your car your own. Anyone can get in your automatic sports car and drive it, but not everyone can drive your manual car quite like you can. Regardless if you’ve ever considered driving manual, think about it the next time you purchase a vehicle and you may find out why some drivers won’t have it any other way!
